- The atrocities against Wildlife are committed on
a massive scale;
- The trade is carried out openly;
The indiscriminate slaughter of Wildlife continues;
In spite of decades of conservation efforts, the massacres
continue openly;
- The wildlife custodians have either accepted this
extermination, have no laws and or policies against
such violation of animal right and or cannot enforce
these laws/ policies;
- That for some reason the local communities do not
value Wildlife conservation;
- That the laws against the traffic in endangered
species are not sufficient to stop the Bushmeat Crisis,
because they do not address the consumption of the
wildlife with in the towns and cities;
- That there is an urgent need for decisive measures
against the perpetration of these crimes;
- In order to understand the reasons for the escalation
and in order to stop the Bushmeat Crisis it is imperative
that every one has to answer the following questions.
- are the local
communities that were once the guardians of Wildlife
set out to exterminate the last reserve of wildlife
and along with that their very own identity?
- are the local
Wildlife custodians when all this is happening?
- can this be
happening on such a massive scale, openly and yet
the Bushmeat Crisis has been extensively addressed
locally and internationally?
- The local tourist industry has the sole right to
deriving economic benefits from the Wildlife resource.
What is their role in the Wildlife conservation struggle
and what should be their obligation to the local communities
that are not allowed to economically utilize wildlife
and other available natural resources because of the
need for wildlife and habitat conservation?
- Where are the local and international justice systems
while all this is happening?
- Why isn’t any one being prosecuted for these
crimes?
- Whose obligation is it to take action against these
crimes?
- What should be the most appropriate course of action
taken?
- Can these crimes be stopped by the current Wildlife
policies that demand the local communities to stop
utilization of their natural resources in favour of
Wildlife conservation with out viable economic alternatives?
- If Wildlife is not depicted as a source of long
term community development what other reason do the
local communities have to conserve Wildlife?
- Is Wildlife a property and thus the sole responsibility/concern
of the local Wildlife custodians?
- Is extinction a local or international loss?
- Is Wildlife a local or global heritage?
- Can the failure by the local Wildlife custodians
to the fulfilment of their obligation to Wildlife
conservation and protection be accepted/ over looked
by the international community?
- Should these perpetrators continue to masquerade
as worthy members of the international community?
- Is international isolation/sanction of these perpetrators
too extremist or even ridiculous?
- Can condemnation, solving the signs of the problem
(treating of victims, saving orphans, breeding programs,
etc) ever be sufficient to stop the Bushmeat Crisis?
